Sports supplements are used by more than just bodybuilders, with athletes and sportsmen of all kinds seeking an energy boost when training. Natural energy supplements are in particular demand, due to their tendency to be safer than their artificial or synthesized counterparts and when it comes to professional competitions less likely to fall foul of the rules and lead to a sporting ban!

There are so many sports supplements out there that it can be confusing for someone starting out in bodybuilding who just wants to know which are the tried and tested varieties. The truth is that there are a number of core ingredients in energy supplements which can be found in various branded goods, even alone or in combination. Here are some of the most effective ingredients, which as available as supplements all of which have impressive amounts of clinical trials to back up their claims!

1. Whey protein powder. There is plenty of research to show that using energy supplements such as whey protein powder help to maximize the beneficial effects of resistance training, which makes this ubiquitous powder a firm favorite among those dedicated to muscle-building. The efficacy of whey protein lies in its ability to speed recovery from the depleting effects of a workout, allowing other nutrients, proteins and other ingredients in the body to go about the business of creating more lean muscle mass.

2. Creatine. These sports supplements are also proven sources of strength, energy and performance enhancement for bodybuilders and athletes. In its most natural form, creatine is present in the human body in the form of creatine phosphate. During the course of a bodybuilding workout, this is broken down by the body to create energy and creatine plus phosphate. These help to replenish and regenerate tired muscles. Taking creatine supplements has been shown to boost the amount of creatine phosphate that is stored in the skeletal muscle tissue by up to 40 per cent. So long as training continues, this translates into increased muscle mass.

3. Pro-hormones. Only relatively recently developed, these sports supplements are most popular among bodybuilders because they are a highly effective means of gaining muscle mass. They are similar to Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) being just one molecule apart - but are legal and far safer, due to the importance of the molecule in question! The molecule only becomes part of the pro-hormones once they have been introduced to naturally occurring bodily enzymes, which makes the pro-hormones bona fide muscle-building hormones, with the same effect as AAS. Unlike their illegal counterpart, however, they cannot be abused.
